When I saw freediving for the first time, I was floored. A world-class athlete myself, I immediately identified with the level of care and preparation put forth by these athletes. After many conversations with freedivers (see "interview with a freediver" ) and experts in the field, it became clear to me: freediving is a sport that is terribly misunderstood by the general public. Contrary to its portrayal as suicidal thrill-seeking, freediving is one of the most natural things we can do. We all have instincts remaining from our aquatic heritage that change the way the body works to make the dives safe. The trick lies in awakening the instinct and strengthening it. This is what freedivers have done, and the subjective experience of this is quite extraordinary (see "zen of freediving") I lived at the Olympic Training Center for a number of years, and roomed with Justin Williford, a member of the U.S. Shooting Team. I was a member of the U.S. Cycling Team, and we would talk for hours at length about our experiences in our finest moments of competition- when we got into the "Zone", or "Flow State" as sports psychologists call it. It's what we lived for (see "flow in sports" ) Upon learning about freediving, I visited Justin in Colorado and told him all about the sport, it's similarities to ours, and how the media is exploiting it. We agreed to make our own film about freediving. We would use it as a vehicle to express our own experiences as athletes while revealing the truth about freediving; that it is a natural, safe, and beautiful sport. Currently, we are seeking an Executive Producer to sponsor the remaining portion of the budget that will enable us to finish the postproduction. If you identify with the messages in this film, and are interested in enabling it's completion, please see the section on "sponsorship". Feel free to browse the site to learn more. A teaser is now posted in the "media" section (see "teaser"), and DVD's available in a few months (see "preorder"). Drop us an email and tell us what you think!
